Washington Post Article on EmmaBy Theresa Vargas Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, June 16, 2008; B01 In Bolivia last month on business, Diego Arias of Arlington County picked up a newspaper and stopped at a familiar face. Prominently placed on the third page, in a section separating winners from losers, was a photograph of Emma Violand-Sanchez. Somehow the landlocked South American nation that Violand-Sanchez left as a teenager more than four decades ago not only knew about her victory in a party caucus to endorse Arlington School Board candidates but also considered the development newsworthy. "It's amazing," Laura Anduze said, looking at a copy of the newspaper her husband, Arias, brought home. "She must have a lot of people who believe in her." The Democratic caucus, held last month to make endorsements for two School Board seats at stake in the fall election, had a record turnout, and Violand-Sanchez received more votes than the five other candidates, including an incumbent, who placed second. The five-member board is nonpartisan. But the caucus victory virtually guarantees Violand-Sanchez a four-year term because the county electorate is overwhelmingly Democratic and because she and runner-up Libby Garvey were the only candidates to file by Tuesday's deadline. And so the November election in all likelihood will make official what is already being celebrated as a milestone: the first election of a Latina to a board that oversees a well-regarded 18,700-student school system.
Emma and Libby are Unopposed!Donna Patterson of the Arlington Co. Electoral Board has informed us there are no new candidates registered for School Board. Tuesday June 10th was the deadline for independent candidates to submit petition sheets and other documents to be on the November ballot.
Words of support from Dr. Lorenzo Esters, Northern Virginia Community College BoardA leader is not one who looks for the credit or who wants to be seen but one who has a vision and encourages teamwork. This is the kind of leader I know Emma Violand-Sanchez to be. She has an extensive background in education. She and I serve on the College Board at Northern Virginia Community College together and I have observed her passion for teamwork and for helping young people. She is a voice for the voiceless advocating for a more effective transition from high school to college for those students for whom English is a Second Language. She advocates for more communication between high schools and colleges so that students are prepared for the rigors of college level work. She is a principled person who has a good heart. . . When you really hear her, you witness a very rare thing, you witness a person who has a heart filled with compassion and goodwill for mankind and a commitment to see it through. Emma has the best combination of mind and heart and strength of leadership through teamwork and feeling for the problems of ordinary people of anybody with whom I’ve ever worked. So I urge each of you to support my friend, Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez for Arlington County School Board.
